I haven't read MC in a while. However, I looked at the passage in question and I tend to agree with the first poster (I think his name is Spur) who said that Lewis is assuming a debate with a person who believes the Gospel accounts of Jesus are reliable and then says "He is only a great teacher."
So I don't think Lewis was implying that this argument was effective with someone who denies the accuracy of the NT.
