To my knowledge, these are the best monographs on the credo/paedobaptism debate:
Credobaptism
K. Aland, Did the Early Church Baptize Infants? (Wipf & Stock 2004)
E. Ferguson, Baptism in the Early Church: History, Theology, and Liturgy in the First Five Centuries (Eerdmans 2013)
T. Schreiner & S. Wright, eds. Believer's Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ (B&H 2007)
H. F. Stander & L. P. Louw, Baptism in the Early Church (EP Books 2004)
G. Welty, "A Critical Evaluation of Paedobaptism":
D. F. Wright, Infant Baptism in Historical Perspective: Collected Studies (Wipf & Stock 2007)
Paedobaptism
R. Beckwith, Calendar, Chronology And Worship: Studies in Ancient Judaism And Early Christianity (Brill 2005), chap. 13.
H. Hoeksema, Believers and Their Seed: Children in the Covenant (RFPA 1997)
J. Jeremias, Infant Baptism in the First Four Centuries (Wipf & Stock 2004)
_____, The Origins of Infant Baptism: A Further Study in Reply to Kurt Aland (Wipf & Stock 2004)
M. Kline, By Oath Consigned: A Reinterpretation of the Covenant Signs of Circumcision and Baptism (Eerdmans 1968)
J. Murray, Christian Baptism (P&R 1992)
V. Poythress, "Linking Small Children with Infants in the Theology of Baptizing," WTJ 59/2 (1997): 143-158:
_____, "Indifferentism and Rigorism in the Church: With Implications for Baptizing Small Children," WTJ 59/1 (1997) 13-29:
B. B. Warfield, "The Polemics of Infant Baptism"
Very surprised not to see Greg Strawbridge's work there. Also Doug Wilson's To a Thousand Generations.
ReplyDeleteOn the baptist side - isn't Paul Jewett's book quite highly regarded?
Even though I'm a credobaptist, I too would recommend Strawbridge's works and Wilson's. Along with C. Matthew McMahon articles at http://www.apuritansmind.com/ just because he was a former credo turned paedo.
DeleteFor the Credo side I'd also include:
The Baptism of Disciples Alone Fred Malone
Along with:
From Paedobaptism to Credobaptism by W. Gary Crampton
Just because here's another instance of a paedo turning credo who has a very high regard for the WCF.
yes ... Wilson's book was great.
ReplyDeleteI found an old list of links to various Baptism Debates in my notes. Some debates might be duplicates of others. I would have like to have found the Gene Cook vs. Paul Manata debate on the topic. But they are no longer on the web (afaik). Here are the links.

John Fesko's book should also be listed for the paedobaptism, side Word, Water, and Spirit: A Reformed Perspective on Baptism. You can read a few pages by clicking here.
