Just remember, if the Sunni militants win then our brothers and sisters there will be massacred unless they can escape. Also, why are you so keen on secular states?
Thomas -- upon our 2003 invasion, our brothers and sisters there (who were not able to escape) were massacred anyway. It is estimated that there were 125,964 – 140,768 civilian deaths from violence during the time that the US was actively engaged. (This figure is from https://www.iraqbodycount.org, which admittedly has an interest in counting. However, that does not invalidate their figures. IBC’s documentary evidence is drawn from crosschecked media reports of violent events leading to the death of civilians, or of bodies being found, and is supplemented by the careful review and integration of hospital, morgue, NGO and official figures).
I think it's safe to say that people will be massacred with or without US intervention. I'm on record as suggesting that "containment" is a sound policy, and as this article linked here relates, there are parties for whom "containment" is in their best interest.
