Mental Reservation

A lot of people are saying “Jason hasn’t told us that he is converting to Roman Catholicism, so we should give him the benefit of the doubt”. That much is true, he is not yet Roman Catholic, but the words he is using very clearly conveys Roman Catholic concepts. And if Jason is converting to Roman Catholicism, he does not really have to say “I’m Roman Catholic” until [likely] Easter 2013, at which time he will have completed RCIA and only then be “received into the Church”. Until that point, he can say “I’m not Roman Catholic” and still not technically be lying. When does anyone suppose that he will reveal this concept to us? Is he really going to continue to perpetuate the idea that “I’m undecided”?

This, too, speaks to his honesty.

  1. I have a question- why is Jason still blogging? If he is still going through some disciplinary process, even if just as a lay member, he should not be, nor should he have been allowed to publically publish his resignation letter. Regardless, what is he going to blog about now? Most apostates want to provide intellectual apology for their new, 5 minute old "faith" and drag others down with them.

  2. Hi David -- it does seem as if he is trying to explain his line of thinking. And if that is so, then he is doing it in Roman Catholic terms. He is already functioning as a Roman Catholic apologist.

  3. The latest commentary offered by Stellman in response to Dr. Trueman's ref21 article seems to just about confirm where this going. On reading it this morning I couldn't help but think just how weak the response was. And others have, yourself included John, pointed out some of those weaknesses. In many ways it's sad but we're approaching a point where the personal tragedy will have to be set to one side. If Stellman is going to present arguments implicitly assuming a Roman Catholic view of the church that frames how Protestants should respond to him. It's no longer just about him if he's proselytising for Rome.
