In defense of a more traditional interpretation Irons has referred to J.V. Dahms' paper The Johannine Use of Monogenēs Reconsidered.
If anyone is interested, the displayed version at the link below is illegible, but the downloaded version is legible. Once downloaded, just fix the file name extension from .pdf ' (with the apostrophe) to .pdf (without it). Then one's default PDF viewer will be able to recognize it.
