FBI background checks

The authorities’ inability to prevent Mr. Roof from obtaining the weapon highlighted the continuing problems in the background check system, which was intended to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, drug users and mentally ill people.

Liberals suffer from incorrigible, invincible naivete. Especially ironic is the part about keeping guns out of the hands of drug users.

You mean, there are people who use drugs? Isn't that…illegal?

Why think tightening background checks will be any more effective in keeping guns out of the hands of criminals than outlawing narcotics keeps that off the street? Despite being illegal, despite the enormous law enforcement resources devoted to, or diverted to, drug trafficking, the fact remains that illegal drugs remain easily available.

If just about anyone can access illegal drugs, why can't just about anyone access illegal guns–even if we had Draconian gun laws to match our Draconian drug laws?

It just makes criminals more ingenious. Take the use of drug spotters.
