So under the Old Covenant, sinfulness of any sort was met with the harshest of punishments:
Idolatry? Death. Picking up sticks on the Sabbath? Death. Cursing one's parents? Death. Having sex with a woman (even your wife!) during her menstrual cycle? Forced exile. Have gay sex? Death.
I'm not sure how stoning was conducted under the Old Testament, but I'm sure it looked something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rgSH0h45Eo
Is it just our wickedness that causes any sense of empathy when we see such actions? Should we attempt to stifle that? After all ... they deserved it, yes? Should we just consider any pity just sentimentalism?

No, sinfulness of any kind wasn't met with the harshest of punishments. Moreover, many penalties could be commuted.

You're known for occasional sarcasm and brushing aside annoying questions. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this is one of those instances.
Otherwise, I'd have to peg you as a pitiless, heartless scoundrel who doesn't really believe all that "dignity of human life" claptrap! ;-)

You're catching on. That's progress.

Why can't I be both sarcastic and a pitiless scoundrel? :-)
