I don't know if I can ask this without causing offense, but it's a sincere question; does anyone know if Roger Olson suffers from a form of slight mental retardation?
It would really explain a lot, and on a personal level it would help me to feel more compassion than contempt for him, I think.
Governments have been interested in regulating marriage for the same reason that they are interested in regulating drugs, pollution, etc. Such things have a direct and measurable impact on society. Who doesn't know this?
The debate should be over what extent government should control the impact of these things on society. Too little control and society suffers at the devastating results of a sinful world. Too much control and the effective use of resources necessary for prosperity is stifled as well as the God-given rights we all possess necessary to pursue beneficial aspirations.
This was essentially advocated by one of my lesbian professors at NYU.

So what exactly is wrong about Olson's proposal?
ReplyDeleteWhy should the government issue marriage licenses?
*facepalm*
