Perhaps it's a bit puritanical to insist that believers dump their cherished family traditions to march off to church on Christmas morning. But it's also self-defeating to complain about keeping Christmas holy when churches close on Dec. 25.
Ironically, in post-Christian Britain it's still the norm for churches to hold a service on Christmas Day, no matter on what day of the week it falls. One of our cherished family traditions was to march off to church on Christmas morning! If Christmas fell on a Saturday or a Tuesday, we would go to church three days in a row (since Christmas Eve services are also common).
I was very disappointed to discover that wasn't the case in the US, and now I'm astonished to learn that some churches will be holding no worship services on Sunday this year because it's Christmas!
