A grandson of the first Bishop of Liverpool [J. C. Ryle], [Gilbert] Ryle was himself an atheist–but he was what he called "a singing atheist". He used to distinguish between those atheists who would join in the hymns in church, and those who, if forced to attend a service, would keep their mouths tightly shut throughout. A.
