Check out this article from Richard Dawkins which reviews Stephen Jay Gould's Full House.

Note, for example, Dawkins' conclusion:

...Gould’s attempt to reduce all progress to a trivial, baseball-style artefact constitutes a surprising impoverishment, an uncharacteristic slight, an unwonted demeaning of the richness of evolutionary processes."

It's good to catch a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the ferocious dissension over evolutionary theory within the evolutionary community itself.
