The evolution of the clerical abuse scandal

I'd like to make a brief observation about the evolution of the Catholic clerical abuse scandal. As I recall, in the early years, coverage indicate that this was about straight bishops covering for queer priests, to avoid lawsuits and scandal.

But it's my impression that the narrative has changed. There's more evidence that it's about straight and queer priests covering for queer bishops. Queer bishops don't crack down because they approve of that activity, they practice that activity, and queer priests are in a position to out them. So there's the blackmail factor.

In addition, straight priests practice a code of silence because they don't wish to be banished to Siberia for confronting queer bishops or going to the press.
