The paradoxical problem of evil

The problem of evil can generate some paradoxes. Ironically, the problem of evil may appear worse when the situation is actually improving. For instance, there's been a drastic reduction in infant mortality in the west, thanks to modern medical science. In the past, parents expected most of their kids to die before reaching adulthood. Now that's very rare and shocking. That makes the death of a child stick out in a way that wasn't the case in the past. So the fact that the world has gotten better in that respect–far better–can oddly enough make the residual evil in kind seem far worse.
