  1. "If we must possess such a formidable power, it should be entrusted only to those who are both morally enlightened and adequately informed."

People like Julian Savulescu and Ingmar Persson?

In any case, I suppose if Savulescu and Persson would volunteer themselves and their friends and families to be the first to step up to the plate for this "moral bioenhancement," then they might somewhat strengthen their case for it.

It'd still probably be a tough sell for hoi polloi like me though. I saw what the Alliance doctors and scientists did to River Tam as well as the population of Miranda! As River put it: "People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome."

  2. The Vision of the Anointed, by Thomas Sowell comes to mind.

Their argument turns on the moral blameworthiness of not looking out for the well-being of those distant from us in time and place, but it also turns on a foundation that provides no basis for morality.
