I got to see my first bone marrow biopsy tonight.

Tonight I got to witness my first bone marrow biopsy. My wife has been in the hospital for the last three days; her hemoglobin (?) was 5.7, and it was supposed to be 12. They called that number "critical". They gave her three or four pints of blood, just to "stabilize" her. And tonight, she had the biopsy.

Hard to believe how big that needle is. Just a local anesthetic. Maybe the adrenalin helped perk her up, because she was feeling a good bit better after the procedure.

The doctor thinks it was just some kind of viral infection.

  2. A bone marrow biopsy is a pretty big diagnostic step for "just some kind of viral infection." And the vast majority of viruses do not cause anemia to that degree.

Not trying to introduce any dissonance or stir things up, John, and I certainly hope everything works out okay.

  3. Hey Ken, it's good to see you again.

We were told that her 5.7 was pretty low, "critical," actually. And she had some other symptoms, including a fever, significant headache, body aches, swelling in her ankles.

She seems to be feeling better, and she can get to come home tomorrow.

  8. Thanks Den. I've posted up above, she is home and feeling a good bit better. Still sore at the point where they did the biopsy.
