Chick alors!

CATHAPOL SAID:

"I am not alone, nor did I make up this information about Babylon being a code name for Rome for St. Peter":

there is only one city on the earth which, in both historical and contemporary perspectives, passes every test John gives, including its identification as Mystery Babylon. That city is Rome.

It's not every day you see a Catholic epologist vouch for Jack Chick scholarship. Since he regards the Jack Chick website as a reliable source of information, I look forward to seeing Scott Windsor on the street corner, passing out Jack Chick tracts and comic books on the church of Rome.

  1. I had a desk drawer full of 'em as a kid. Fortunately my best friend, Mike, and his RC family (they lived across the street) forgave me for earnestly presenting Mike with "Are Roman Catholics Christians?" I suppose they rightly chalked my well-intentioned overtures up to youthful ignorance and Bible Belt Baptist zeal. Not sorry I tried, you understand; just sorry I didn't have more knowledge or tact, not to mention better literature/tools. This was in the days when I thought "Rebecca Brown, M.D." was, like, a real-life demon slayer. Imagine my rueful amusement years later when "Buffy" became all the rage. That'll keep ya humble, folks.

  4. Cathapol, sorry sir, but I don't buy the argument:

    *tongue-in-cheek*

I know the Bible says "Babylon" for where Peter wrote from ..... .... but it really means Rome.

See, that's exactly when you need Mother Church to interpret for you; the Bible says many things but only in code the Roman lens is able to make clear.

    *end tongue-in-cheek*

I still buy the argument if Peter claims he was in Babylon, he was in Babylon, especially given Paul said he was in Rome, and indeed he was.

  5. Of course, I cited SEVERAL sources which state "Babylon" (the kingdom of which had LONG been destroyed by the time St. Peter came on the scene) is a biblical code word for "Rome." I included Jack Chick as an EXAMPLE and that I wasn't strictly looking at pro-Catholic sources, Chick being one of the worst. So why does Mr. Hays focus on that ONE citation? Sensationalism? That would be my best guess - as he seems to thrive on it.

aztexan, I too used to have several Chick tracts - many of which I tried to use on my wife prior to my conversion. The Death Cookie tract and the Fr. Rivera comics specifically come to mind. Sadly, many non-Catholics (and I was no exception to this when I was one) think Chick tells the truth about Catholicism - yet his tracts are so packed with lies it isn't even funny. Ironic how when that's what you WANT to see as truth, you do see it as such.

  6. Yes, you cited some other hack sources as well. Because you don't invest in scholarly resources, whether Catholic or Protestant, you have to Google whatever you can scape off the Information Highway. So you serve us roadkill in lieu of reputable scholarship.

Scott, I see what you're getting at, but keep in mind I was between 9 and 11 years old at the time. "Want" didn't much enter the equation.

The real tragedy is that nutty Chick and Rivera are no farther off the mark than they are. Come out of 'er, Scott. :-)

  8. "The Death Cookie" was the best. And totally true.

  9. Anyone ever read this: http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/thirty.htm

Good stuff from an ex-papist priest. He especially emphasizes the sinister nature of auricular confession, the implications of which I had not fully thought through till I skimmed this a few years ago. Enjoy.

  10. There's a "cleaner," more-readable version of the above book (Thirty Years in Hell), but without the priceless illustrations: Thirty Years in Hell

Louis, the very premise of the comic is a lie. Satan did not give us bread and call it God - GOD DID! Matthew 26:26

St. Paul repeats our Lord's words and emphasizes the point that partaking of this Holy Communion unworthily brings upon judgment to those who do so - and for what reason? For not realizing the Body of Christ. 1 Cor. 11:24-28

Clearly Scripture is where Catholics find this truth - and it was not from Satan meeting with some unnamed pope at some undocumented time in the history of the Church.

Good! I didn't use that argument!

In context, the “body of Christ” has reference, not to transubstantiation, but to the church. The Corinthians dishonored Christ by dishonoring fellow Christians through their misconduct at the agape feast.
