Many curves are flattening (2020-03-24 -- UPDATED)

Update -- apparently there were far more new cases around than just the 2411 initially reported here. The site that I've linked to is a new site intends to keep a running total of the new cases and deaths in each state. It relies on official sources (seems like state departments of health), but unfortunately, these do not always update in the most timely way, and nor does this site update in an automated way. So the numbers are somewhat behind. From what I can tell, there were actually 13000 new cases in the last day or so, not the 2411 that were named in the original post (which I got from a source that I trust). Sorry for the confusion. Comments are closed at this point.

From this morning on Facebook: 2355 of the 2411 new Coronavirus cases Monday [in the US] were in New York. 26 of the 29 new deaths were in NY. Most states didn’t record a single new case.

  1. Most states didn't report a new case?

    1. Seems that way. Click on the Worldometers link and scroll down. There you’ll find statistics from each state, along with sources. It’s possible this has to do with testing or the absence of it. It’s also possible the data are not complete. But those figures for New York and for the country should be fairly accurate.

  2. I know NC reported 40 new cases in Durham county alone yesterday. And Wake (where I live) reported 10 -15.

    2. Blake, I know NC reported 40 new cases in Durham county alone yesterday. And Wake (where I live) reported 10 -15.

The Worldometers site gives 410 total cases in North Carolina. For NC statistics, the site relies on testing from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and also "The News and Observer", which says "North Carolina has at least 413 cases of coronavirus as of March 24, according to data from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and county health departments. Seems as if things may possibly not be updating quickly enough, but the numbers seem fairly close in any event.

  3. Colorado reported nearly 120 cases yesterday...we always tend to find out via the governor in the afternoon.

    1. Trent: From the Colorado source:

Data is updated daily by about 4 p.m. and includes cases reported through 4 p.m. the previous day. This reporting gap gives our epidemiologists time to review the data and improve the accuracy. Due to this delay, our numbers may be different than what is being reported by local public health departments. As cases continue to be investigated the data in this report is subject to change.

Note: This summary only includes data through 3/22 and does not reflect cases since then.

The site I posted is drawing from official sources, but those official sources don't always update in the most timely way.
