Brights

According to one website, these are the "50 Smartest People of Faith".

I don't agree with the list. I would've picked a different list.

I think some people should've been included who weren't. For example, William Dembski, D.A. Carson, John Frame, Vern Poythress, and Steve Hays, to name a few commendable candidates! :-)

  1. Not only do I not agree with the list....I think it incongruent with the Christian ethic to post such a list and even to think such thoughts. Hey Jesus, which one of us is the smartest. AND is it ok for us to publish it? A disciple once prayed, Lord, increase my faith. We seem more apt to pray, Lord, increase our ego by increasing our intellect. Discouraging!!!

  2. It's an ad hominem response to the atheist claim that religious people (not just Christians) are unintelligent, so I wouldn't have said it was necessarily egotistical.

  3. I don't see ego, I see appropriate factual response to a specific claim against "religion" in general and Christianity in particular. I agree with Patrick, though, in that there were a number of very smart, very faithful Christians which were not included.

  4. Ed,

I titled this post "Brights." If you click on the link, the article notes atheists like Dawkins and Dennett use the term "brights" to refer to atheists while simultaneously using the term "dims" to refer to the religious, particularly Christians. With this in mind, Thomas Keningley and Mr. Fosi have already pointed out the rationale for the post.

BTW, I've been following your comments here for a while now, Ed. I'm sorry for the harsh words, but I don't know how else to get thru to you. You have a bad habit of chastising fellow Christians for perceived immoralities. I suppose if it were genuine immoralities, that's one thing. But I don't recall a time when your moral castigations and indignations were totally justified. Further, you do this when Christians attempt to do apologetics, thus sidetracking them. You berate fellow Christians as a Mr. Holier than Thou while the same Christians attempt to do work for the kingdom. Sure, you pay lip service to your own sinfulness when you chastise others, but in point of fact you're actually blind to your own mock piety. I agree with Steve and Jason: if you continue to behave like this, then I'll delete your comments as well.

  5. That's quite a list. The compilers of it seem to be readers of First Things, as there are a number of names from that part of the world.

I was glad to see that Mohler made the list. Plantinga and Wolterstorff are familiar names. N.T. Wright.

Dr. Benjamin Carson, recently in the news, made the list.

The current pope and also Christoph Schönborn, probably a leading candidate to be a future pope, also made the list.

  6. Marilyn McCord Adams is utterly horrible to put on this list. She may be "academically" smart, but she is a dreadful heretic. Bleah.

I much rather have Steve Hays on this list instead of her.

  7. If we could know the dumbest thing these smartest people ever did the list would dissolve before our eyes.
