  1. A better title for this post would be, "A Liberal Catholic's Contribution To The Secularization Of America". Hesburgh is detested by ortodox Catholics.

  2. So why didn't his religious superiors discipline the man?

  3. There has been a lack of discipline for many years in the American Catholic Church. Thankfully, under Benedict, discipline is being restored.

  4. It is not just the American RC Church. It is happening in Ireland, and Austria under Schonborn, and elsewhere. It is actually a failure of the "infallible magisterium" at Vatican 2. Having set up certain expectations (through equivocal use of language) these liberal groups went on their own way with the full expectation that they had the blessing of "the Church". The "discipline" you see now is not going to bring these folks in line. More likely it is goin to cause resentment, shut-downs, and folks just leaving.

  5. Yes John, these folks will be resentfull, many will leave, and probably some shut downs. But once the pruning is done, there will be growth again. The history of the church shows we have a crisis, we have a period of setbacks, then God gives us a strong pope, good bishops, and dedicated priests, and we're back on our feet again.

  6. Looks like the papacy needs pruning. Paul VI and John-Paul II were permissive parents. Let the kids run wild. Raised a generation of juvenile delinquents. Mother Church a welfare queen.

  7. Yes, we need one pope to save us from another pope. What went wrong in the conclave? Did money pass hands? Did someone miscount the ballots? Did someone stuff the ballot box? How did you get two stinkers like Paul VI and John-Paul II before Benedict XVI saved your bacon?

  8. Clearly the Vatican needs to change the rules on papal elections. From now on, as a safety precaution, the cardinals should elect two popes instead of one. That way each pope can police the other pope.

  9. Operative phrase being ...a failure of the "infallible magisterium" at Vatican 2. Having set up certain expectations (through equivocal use of language)
