More Support For The Shroud Of Turin

Brian Auten recently linked an article about a recent study that seems to support the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin and its status as evidence for Jesus' resurrection.

  1. Apparently John Calvin was aware of various alleged shrouds of Christ including the one we now call the "Shroud of Turin". He obviously rejected its authenticity.

A common objection to its authenticity (which even Calvin used) is how the full-length image on the Turin shroud seems to contradict John 20:7 which implies that more than one piece of cloth was used to wrap the body of our Lord.

"and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself." - John 20:7(ESV)

I don't know how proponents of its authenticity resolve this problem. But there might be a solution that works.

  2. The Sudarium of Oviedo on the other hand doesn't suffer from that problem. Moreover, its history is much more well documented.

Interestingly, the blood on both the Turin Shroud and the Sudarium cloth share the same blood group AB. If they did a DNA test and confirmed that the blood came from the same person, that would be EVEN MORE interesting. But I doubt such a comparison would ever be done.

  3. Annoyed Pinoy,

The case for the Shroud is based largely on modern scientific research and information not known to Calvin and his contemporaries. John 20:7 has been addressed by those who think the Shroud is authentic, including individuals who believe in Biblical inerrancy. For example, Gary Habermas addresses the subject in an interview I linked last year.

  4. TurretinFan recently corrected me regarding my citation of the Habermas interview mentioned above. See here. Habermas has addressed John 20:7 elsewhere, but not in that interview.
