In light of Michael Sudduth's conversion to Hinduism, and efforts to justify the Hindu "scriptures" philosophically, there's evidence that the Vedic sages were potheads. Here's a classic monograph on the subject:
Timothy Leary referred to pot as "harmless and giggly"- his thing was acid, more along the lines of what John might have been imbibing while writing Revelation. But who knows? Marijuana and ergot have both been known for a long time.
