Although "atheism" is the usual term, it would be more theologically and psychologically accurate if we started classifying "atheists" as "misotheists." This is a rare word that we need to popularize. When militant "atheists" write about God, they are seething with fear and loathing of God and Christians. So the vanilla gray term "atheism" fails to capture their outlook. "Misotheism" is far more accurate.
Fair enough, Steve. But we need a parallel term to classify theists who seethe with fear and loathing of a godless Universe and atheists. "Misoatheism" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Sounds more like "atheism induced by eating soup in a Japanese restaurant" anyway.

Actually, it's misotheism, not misoatheism.
One less syllable too.
Hey rho. Glad to see you've still got your sense of humor. Mmmm, miso....
ReplyDeleterocking: "misoatheism" was my parallel term. Please read my post again.
I've heard the works of Lovecraft described using this word. Having read a good deal of his catalog, I'm inclined to agree.

Ah, I see. My apologies.
rocking: no apologies necessary. I didn't really put it too clearly.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we just need a term for people of all persuasions who seethe with fear and loathing. How about "grumps"?
