Divine mockery

Being a Christian, my assumption is that God does not, nor cannot, mock a sinner.

20Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets...24Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh (Prov 1:20,24-26).

  1. 1Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
    4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.

    Psalms 2

  2. I think you're quoting him out of context.

What he meant to say was "Being your average Christian in the 21st century, my assumption is that God does not, nor cannot, go against the grain of my modern sentiments."

  3. Jesus said, "It is Finished." He drank the cup of God's righteous anger, and bore the sin as the Lamb of God slain before the foundation of the universe. before Adam ever was created, God had His wrath already satisfied in the death of His Son.
For who did God do this incredible deed of mercy?
For those whom He chose. In one sense all mankind is Judas, and yet God chose to love sinners like us.

I suppose when we see the holy white-hot wrath of God on the Day of Judgment, we will see that we should be over there with Judas and the other reprobates, but for His mercy and His will of perfection.
I just can not understand this yet.

Good study on Limited Atonement though.

  4. In context, Ponter's point is that God does not mock sinners in His overtures of mercy and especially by offering them the Gospel. This has nothing to do with God's mocking judgments against those who have rejected Him. Note (in the passage you quoted) that wisdom first offers, then mocks. She does not mock by offering.

On another note . . . filing this and similar posts under "Anti-Calvinism" appears extreme and reactionary. Is it possible that Calvinism is a slightly wider stream than you imply? Do you really think Moderates are ANTI-Calvinist?

I am not objecting to the presentation of arguments against Moderate Calvinism. The discussion is worthwhile. But wouldn't it be more appropriate (not to mention charitable and historically accurate) to file these under "Moderate Calvinism"?

  5. I think he needs to read Job 38-41 a little slower this time.

"Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like his? Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.

Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low, look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand. Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave.

Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you."

God is the ONLY being who would be justified in mocking us.
