How NOT to argue against Sola Scriptura

  1. i like the comment: "The books of the Bible are not called canonical because The Church has 'decided' which books to call Scripture, and which books to view as non-canonical. Rather, that decision was made simply by the fact that the Scriptures had God for their author." that quote is a keeper and well stated.

  2. There is a shorter answer to Mr Postjean's criticism:

Catholics (to simplify) believe that if you wilfully misinterpret or ignore the Supreme Rule (ie, Tradition, which incorporates Scripture), you risk being smacked down by the Pope at a heresy trial.

Whereas Protestants believe that if you wilfully misinterpret or ignore the Supreme Rule (ie, Scripture alone), you are certain to be placed in the "goats" rather than the "sheep" queue by the Son of Man on Judgment Day.

I think it fair to say that Judgment Day seems as imminent and inevitable to most Evangelical, Reformed and Fundamentalist Protestants as Kung/ Curran summons does to the average Catholic.

Conservative Protestants do not, any more than conservative Catholics do, believe that as long as you can come up with a figleaf of semantic plausibility ("I didn't covet his ox - I coveted his Wii!"), you can forget about facing judgment one day, before one tribunal or another.
