Famous last words

There were only two of them in the room when the end finally came. The woman, realizing there was nothing more she could do, began praying. At first the prayers were silent, but as she realized how close the end really was, her prayers became audible. She was praying aloud and Mother [Joan Crawford] heard the words. My mother raised her head. The last coherent words from her mouth were, “Damn it…don’t you dare ask God to help me!” A few minutes later, Mother was dead.
