The Anti-Lewis

Here are two reviews of Philip Pullman by Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens' expose is all the more revealing, if not ironic, when you consider that Hitchens is every bit as much the militant atheist as Pullman.

Pullman's first novel is coming to the silver screen later this year. So be on your guard.

This is the Most Dangerous Author in Britain

A Labour of Loathing

UPDATE: The Above reviews are by Peter Hitchens, not Christopher Hitchens. See comment below. Sorry 'bout that.

  1. I love your blog but I think you are confusing Christopher Hitchens with his brother Peter. These reviews are by Peter Hitchens. You are correct concerning the rabid atheism of Christopher. I think I have read somewhere once upon a time, however, that Peter is actually a believer.

Once again, you do a great job. Keep it up.

  3. Yes, don't confuse Peter with Christopher. Peter Hitchens is probably the most right wing conservative journalist in the British press and is the complete opposite of Christopher Hitchens on matters of religion. Peter Hitchens is an Anglican. Christopher is an outspoken antitheist.

"The real difference between Peter and myself is the belief in the supernatural. I'm a materialist and he attributes his presence here to a divine plan. I can't stand anyone who believes in God, who invokes the divinity or who is a person of faith."

This is a brilliant rebuttal of some of Pullman's slurs about Lewis.

  5. I've read Pullman's Dark Materials series. Interesting read, especially if you have a theological background. Pullman is also on the back of Dawkings book "The God Delusion" giving it grand praise.

Question: Would reading Dawkins "The God Delusion" give one a good grasp of the current Atheistic worldview? If not, what book(s) would you recommend?

There are worldviews that are non-theistic, but I don't think there is a single "atheistic worldview". If you mean naturalism, you could check out Carrier's "Sense and Goodness", if you mean an overview of arguments, Everitt's "Non-Existence of God".

  7. The view of Peter seems to be that its horrible for an atheist to write a children's book.

Of course, a theist may not want to buy a book promoting atheism for their child (just as I wouldn't want to buy a book promoting christianity for my child), but then I don't much care for fiction that beats you over the head with an ideological agenda whether I agree with that ideology or not....it makes for bad storytelling.
