So Chadwick's statement is a challenge to them. My guess would be then that they'd say he's a crank.John Bugayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17728044301053738095noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-34221586412090577342008-11-14T22:26:00.000-05:002008-11-14T22:26:00.000-05:00No church I've attended has acted like anythin...No church I've attended has acted like anything other than a power grab or a cult of personality. One preacher or pastor dominates: sometimes they do good things, sometimes not. The Catholic Church is just the AT&T while everyone else is the mom-and-pop shops: more organized, more affluent, more connections. The bigger the church, the bigger the egos (despite the pretense otherwise). The method of control varies of course, but the end is to keep the sheep inline. Mind your theology, Mister! No Arminianism or Universalist garbage here!

And of course, it's frequently about money. Ever see a mega-church pastor who wasn't raking in close to (if not more than) 7 figures a year?Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01694207997231305470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-2949625914581225592008-11-14T22:25:00.000-05:002008-11-14T22:25:00.000-05:00What's the assessment by Catholic loyalists toward...What's the assessment by Catholic loyalists towards Chadwick's work?

Do they more or less grant veracity, or do they disdainfully dismiss?Truth Unites... and Divideshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08891402278361538353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-74236638453517433352008-11-14T19:30:00.000-05:002008-11-14T19:30:00.000-05:00Pope Pius IV had the plan of publishing to all the...Pope Pius IV had the plan of publishing to all the world the full acts. If he had done so, the history of European controversy would have been different.

Steve, does Chadwick give any of the flavor of these deliberations?

One or two of the leaders of the defining party gave the impression that history did not matter.

This is really a prevailing attitude these days, especially with regard to the early papacy (all the papacy, really). All that matters to the papacy, it seems, is to hold onto its power, and they will shape the theological side of the issue any way that they can.

An assembly of 60...

Unreal that such a small group could have done so much damage.

“On 12 April 1870 Pope Pius IX suddenly summoned Theiner to his presence. He was excited and angry. He said that Theiner was reported to have taken Lord Acton into the Secret Archives and given him documents for his use…He started blaming Acton—‘he is not one of us’

I remember Neuhaus crowing in the pages of First Things some time ago that, even knowing what he knew, Acton remained a Catholic.

They trusted him now so little that they walled up the door which led into the archives from Theiner’s apartment in the tower,

Such vindictiveness. And such a willingness to act in a way so out-of-touch with reality. You can tell a tree by its fruit.John Bugayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17728044301053738095noreply@blogger.com
