Not whether there are oter possible worlds.

I suppose, given God's Godness, he could have done just about anything and neither I, nor Reppert, nor Vyautas would be in a position to even ask the question they're asking. Who are we to judge God?

From where I sit it this world doesn't always look that great from any theological position.

But I'm not God and so I'm content to call his work "best" without needing to wrest real sovereignty away from him.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-10045364041798594162009-08-17T11:58:44.676-04:002009-08-17T11:58:44.676-04:00VYTAUTAS SAID:

On the other hand, I don’t think God is obliged to create a best possible world. The fundamental distinction is between good and bad, not between better and best.

God won’t create a bad world. However, I can’t very well fault God for creating me, although he could obviously do better than the likes of me.

In addition, we’re assuming that God only instantiates one possible world. Perhaps that’s true. But just offhand I can’t think of any antecedent reason which would preclude God from instantiating more than one possible world. Parallel actual worlds which exemplify alternate possibilities. Not every possibility, to be sure (since some possibilities have no redeeming value). But more than one.

DARYL SAID:

“Given that God created this world and not another, and given that he has fore-ordained the events of this world and not another, I don't see any reasonable option to calling this one the best possible one.”

That assumes there is one best world to choose from. You need to argue for that assumption.stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16547070544928321788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-5315656053741455052009-08-17T09:46:25.081-04:002009-08-17T09:46:25.081-04:00Given that God created this world and not another,...Given that God created this world and not another, and given that he has fore-ordained the events of this world and not another, I don't see any reasonable option to calling this one the best possible one.

Unless you think (as Reppert cleatrly does) that the highest good in the universe is that I be happy and sstisfied with everything all the time. In which case you have a serious problem.

You, that is (Vic), not God, or someone who believes him.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-68169433619527818562009-08-16T17:30:14.772-04:002009-08-16T17:30:14.772-04:00Steve: I'm not at all sure there is a best of ...Steve: I'm not at all sure there is a best of all possible worlds.
