I don't think one form of lack of sobriety should be illegal when others are not, but that is a matter of opinion. Mine is that, if gov't welfare were eliminated, and draconian laws were in place to punish those who give intoxicants to minors, it should be none of the gov't's business if one citizen wants make, import, or sell such to another citizen. The jails would likely empty, law enforcement would be able to concentrate on other matters, and on a minor note, members of my profession would no longer have to double as policemen. If someone told me they were having back pain, e.g., I could believe them. After all, if all they wanted were narcotics, they could go down the street & get them as easily as they could get a bottle of whiskey. <br />Meanwhile, absent welfare, those who didn't work wouldn't eat. This would likely make it much more difficult for the chronically 'stoned' to survive. <br />'Course I recognize mine as a minority opinion...Dochttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00205311616949194893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-29425368942288873612014-08-22T22:24:28.458-04:002014-08-22T22:24:28.458-04:00It's true, albeit counterintuitive, that attem...It's true, albeit counterintuitive, that attempting to prevent evil sometimes causes more evil than permitting evil. stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16547070544928321788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-41935678891686265002014-08-22T21:48:59.516-04:002014-08-22T21:48:59.516-04:00I don't know what the state of affairs is in t...I don't know what the state of affairs is in the States, but Peter HItchens has repeatedly argued that the "War on Drugs" in the UK is fictional, and that we are living in a state of effective decriminalisation. I wonder if something comparable could be true in the USA.Thomas Keningleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01624894562826380210noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6789188.post-77338226827600321632014-08-22T17:29:38.082-04:002014-08-22T17:29:38.082-04:00Steve, wouldn't it be fair to state their prem...Steve, wouldn't it be fair to state their premise as - permitting evil rids of evil. That's seems to be the gist of the argument for legalizing drugs. I imagine they would disagree but when I've listened to others speak about legalizing drugs, they all seem to argue as you've described.Auggybendoggyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01730767940271614636noreply@blogger.com
